Abstract for Project Proposal:
The Kyrgyz National Agrarian University (KNAU) recognizes the importance of the fisheries sector and the value of fish as important component in the people’s diet. Through aquaculture promotion and inland fisheries development, the KNAU sees opportunities for poverty reduction, livelihood improvement and diversification of rural employment both for men and women.

The present inland capture fisheries and aquaculture production in the Kyrgyz Republic is only about 10% of what it used to be in 1980s before the Soviet Union disintegration. Departure of practically all Soviet trained fishery biologists was even more dramatic for the sector.

Today there is no academic level teaching in the Central Asian universities in fisheries and aquaculture management or development. In many Central Asian countries the importance of fish culture has been recognized but its development has been hampered by a lack of education. A major hindrance is especially the absence of well trained teachers and lack of educational material related to local and similar climatic conditions. That is why the Kyrgyz National Agrarian University is highly interested in developing fisheries and aquaculture management M.Sc. programme by EU TEMPUS Program. KNAU would be able to offer this specific study program in Central Asian countries for fisheries and aquaculture education.
